A kurti/kurta is something almost every woman has in her wardrobe. From the casual everyday ones to the stylish ones perfect for outings, we all have an entire section in our closet devoted to this versatile ethnic garment. Despite having so many kurtas, a lot of us don’t end up wearing them. The reason? A lot of girls feel like a kurta isn’t one of the most stylish pieces of clothing. For an outing or get together, they’d rather choose something trendier. Thankfully and gladly, things are changing. New-age Bollywood actors are showing the world that kurtas can be fashionable too. Be it a dinner outing or airport look, Janhvi Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan slay in their traditional Indian wear. They’re ditching sneakers and denims, and instead opting for basic kurtas. I personally love their style as they’re showing us how a simple cotton kurta can be fashionable too.

After seeing all these Gen-Z stars styling kurtas in a super-cool avatar, I too decided to raid my wardrobe and put to use all the long kurtas I have. While some were great to be worn as it is, I gave some a stylish twist by incorporating some DIY hacks.

With these hacks, you can turn any plain kurta into a fashionable outfit without burning a hole in your pocket.

  • Wear a belt

Long, flared kurtis are so versatile. Though a lot of people buy them, they don’t end up wearing them as they feel it adds a lot of volume around their body. Well, I used to feel so too until I came across this super-cool hack. All you have to do is wear the kurti as it is without any bottom. Make sure, the kurta you choose doesn’t have high slits because if it does, the whole purpose is defeated. It should have some flare like a frock. Next, wear a waist belt around it to create a chic Indo-western look. So cool, right? Within seconds, you have the trendiest brunch look ready. Also, go crazy with the belts you choose. While plain bands work best for casual outings, embellished ones look good too if the occasion calls for it. Choose florals, abstract designs or paisley print kurtas.

  • Wear a skirt to create a lehenga look

These days, young girls don’t want to wear the usual salwar-kameez for weddings. They find it too boring. And, with Insta-worthy fashion taking over, everyone desires an outfit that is unique and will look good on the ‘gram. Well, when it comes to a staple kurta, it can be worn to a wedding function too provided it is styled correctly. One long kurta DIY hack I swear by is wearing a skirt/lehenga under a kurta. Grab your favourite kurta (it can be sleeveless or with sleeves) and wear a flared skirt under it. If the kurta is worked, a plain skirt works best. However, make sure your long kurta has high slits. This is what will make the entire outfit look flowy and give you an elongated, slim look.

  • Wear a long/short shrug or jacket over it

Solid coloured long kurtis are a wardrobe staple. Most of us have them in large numbers. When I was in college, I would usually style them by accessorising it with chunky oxidised jewellery. However, one hack changed my life. Have you ever thought of wearing a shrug, jacket or ethnic waist coat over a kurta? Well, it creates an alluring look. It’s a mix-and-match trend that can elevate your ethnic look without much effort. Based on your body type, choose a jacket of any length. If you’re short, a long jacket would be ideal whereas for slightly taller girls, short shrugs would do. You can go crazy with the patterns of the coat. I usually buy neutral-coloured shrugs so that I can use them with any kurta. Ikat print ones are my favourite. This hack is fit for women of all age groups.

  • Pair it with a matching pant/bottom

You’re probably aware how much coordinated sets are in fashion. Wearing a matching top and bottom is something everyone is doing right now. What if we told you that you can create your very own co-ord set? If you’re looking for a fun hack to style your long kurta, we highly recommend you wear it with a matching bottom. Even though very little of it is going to be seen at the bottom, it will instantly give you a whole new outfit. Though you might not have the exact shade of the pants or skirt, you can always go in for the closest match. Under a long kurta, a dhoti pant, palazzo or cigarette pants in the same colour is an ideal choice. If you have a matching dupatta, you’re sorted.

  • Pair it with skinny jeans

A kurta paired with jeans is something that will never go out of vogue. It is the simplest way to achieve an Indo-Western look in minutes. It’s also every college student’s favourite styling hack. The best part is that jeans can be worn with a short as well as long kurta. Jeans look great under Chikankari kurtas. Just wear some Indian footwear or juttis, and you’re good to go. To create a cool, contemporary look, you can even team your kurta with ripped/distressed jeans.

Now, quickly run to your wardrobe and see how you can make the most of all your kurtas you’ve simply hoarded for years. No matter which kurti you choose – long, short or Anarkali, you can elevate it on your own without seeking the help of a fashion designer or tailor.
