Gender bias and discrimination are two things that have held women back at the workplace for generations. Even if they want to pursue something, they’re told that they’ve “crossed the age”. Honestly, several inspiring women have proved time after time that age is just a number. Dreams do not have an expiry date. If you’re determined, motivated and backed with the right support, anything is possible.

The story of Garima Sharma proves that it’s never too late to start anything.

A native of Rajasthan, Garima set an example for future generations when she became a Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) at the age of 51. At an age where most people contemplate retirement, Garima took the brave decision of appearing for an examination. Most government examinations only allow candidates up to the age of 40 to apply. However, there is a notable exception for widowed women. Yet, very few women decide to take a leap and pursue their dreams. A major reason women hold themselves back is because they feel age can be a hindrance. In Garima Sharma’s case, things were a bit different.

Behind Every Successful Woman, There Is an Understanding Man

We often hear the phrase “behind every successful man, there stands a woman”. However, Garima went on to pursue the RAS exam to fulfil her husband’s dream. Yes, you read that right! Sandeep Kumar Sharma was a government officer himself and thus, urged his wife to find a government-related post. At this time, Garima Sharma served as a teacher. She taught in several schools located all across Jaipur. He was a husband who always supported his wife. Sadly, in 2014 he passed away after battling liver issues for two consecutive years. Garima even donated her liver to him but unfortunately time had something else in store. After his demise, she decided to fulfil his last wish by pursuing the RAS exam. Of course, it’s easier said than done.

Garima burned the midnight oil preparing for various competitive exams in 2015. She passed the exam for RAS (Rajasthan Administrative Services), school lecturer and college lecturer in 2016. She then went on to become a Tehsildar. However, her dreams were bigger.

For this reason, she reappeared for the RAS examination in 2018, under the widow category. However, there is just one condition that 60 years should not be completed before appointment.

After cracking the RAS examination for the second time in 2021, she went on to become the SDM of Bagoda, Rajasthan at the age of 51.

Even today, a lot of people apply for the RAS exam. While some go for it, others hold back owing to several factors. Garima Sharma’s unwavering spirit is something to be reckoned with. She is one of the most inspiring women in India. Despite facing several hardships, nothing could deter her undying spirit and determination. Even today, her story continues to inspire young as well as old aspirants. A special mention to Garima’s late husband for standing by her side and encouraging her to push her boundaries. Seldom you find men who are supportive of a woman’s dreams.

Kudos to this power couple!
